Quotation Marks

I enjoy teaching writing, but one of the more difficult concepts that students struggled with was when to use quotation marks. I expressed that when writing a story writers need to show the readers when someone is talking. We practiced writing the statements said by the students on sentence strips. I purposely left out the quotation marks because I wanted the students to use the "lips clothespins" to denote the beginning and end of the quotation.

It wasn't long before the students began to recognize when to use quotation marks!
